What does this tool look at?

Anything that is easy to get wrong by hand, generated for you: meta tags, schema, robots.txt, sitemaps and redirect rules.

  • Parameters normalised to lowercase and hyphens
  • No duplicate parameter if the URL already has one
  • Short notes explaining what each field is for

What this tool measures

When the direct traffic line in your analytics report balloons, the measurement is rarely at fault: campaign links went out untagged. UTM parameters write into the URL which channel, campaign and creative a visitor came from.

The real problem is not forgetting to tag, it is everyone tagging differently. Instagram, instagram and Instagram-Story never merge into one report row, they become three sources. The tool lowercases every value, turns spaces into hyphens and drops anything outside letters, digits, dots, underscores and hyphens.

If the address already carries UTM parameters they are overwritten, and the audit lists which ones changed. That stops a second round of tagging from producing a broken URL with two competing sources.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Paste the destination address

The full URL of the page the visitor lands on. Use the final address rather than a shortener that redirects: some redirects drop query parameters and the tagging is lost.

  2. 2

    Fill source, medium and campaign

All three are required. Source is where traffic comes from (google, instagram, newsletter), medium is the channel type (cpc, email, social, referral), campaign is the campaign name (spring-sale).

  3. 3

Add term and content when needed

utm_term is the keyword targeted in paid search, utm_content separates creatives within the same campaign. Both are optional and are simply omitted when blank.

  4. 4

    Agree on naming once

Write down the source and medium values your team uses. The tool fixes formatting but cannot know whether you meant email or e-mail; that decision is yours.

  5. 5

Place the link and test it

Open the URL and confirm the source appears correctly in the GA4 realtime report. Campaign reports may take a day to populate.

When to use it

  • Sending a newsletter, giving each button its own utm_content to see which one gets clicked.
  • Tagging Google Ads and Meta campaigns so they stay comparable in one report.
  • Putting a campaign tag behind the short link printed on a poster or a receipt.
  • Tracking partner or reseller links separately to see which one actually brings customers.

Reading the result

  • Where the link goes

Into the final URL field of an ad platform, the href of a button in an email template, the link field of a social profile. If you shorten it, the shortened address must be this tagged one.

  • Never use it on internal links

Adding UTM tags to links between your own pages makes GA4 restart the session and lose the original source. Use event tracking for on-site clicks instead.

  • The overwrite warning

Parameters marked as overwritten were already present in the address you supplied. That usually means an already-tagged link was tagged again, so double-check which source is correct.

  • Keep personal data out

UTM values sit in the address bar and land in browser history and server logs. Putting an email address, a phone number or a customer name there is the easiest way to leak data.

  • The length figure

The statistics show the character count of the result. Very long URLs get truncated in social posts and are unreadable in print; use a shortener for that, do not abbreviate the parameters.

If a tagged URL gets indexed, the same content exists at a second address. As long as your pages canonicalise to the parameter-free URL, nothing breaks. Never put campaign URLs in the sitemap.

GA4 maps some values to channel groups automatically: cpc goes to paid search, email to email, social to organic social, referral to referral. An invented medium dumps your traffic into the other bucket.

Yes. Analytics treats values case-sensitively, so Instagram and instagram become two rows and one campaign's data splits in half. That is why the tool lowercases everything.

Three: source, medium, campaign. Term and content belong there only when you need the distinction. Five parameters on every link turns the report into a dump of detail.
